"Tiger in the Menagerie" by Emma Jones

"Tiger in the Menagerie" by Emma Jones

1. Wild vs. Civilization

2. Poem Summary
This seven stanza poem begins by saying that they were
not sure about how the tiger got into the menagerie
("no one could say how the tiger...") and what he represented.

3. Analysis of the first stanza
in the begining of the first stanza is says that no one
knew or understood how the tiger got into the menagerie,
this is pretty obvious since the poem says: "no one could
say how the tiger got into the menagerie"
Poetic devices which reprresent the tiger
In this stanza the poem refers to the tiger as “too flash, too blue”, blue is related to blue blood, royal blood. this represents beauty, that is why some one would be drizzled
If they saw him
4. Analysis of stanza 3/ Relationship between the cage and the tiger
This stanza is entirely a metaphor. It talks about the
"relationship" between the cage and the tiger. They are
similar because they both have stripes. However, in
this stanza it is said that ther bars and the tiger's stripes
hurt each other. This shows that the tiger is miseable
when he is inside the cage.

5. Stanza 2 vs. 5

6. Structure of the poem

  • seven stanzas
  • no more than 3 lines for each stanza
  • enjungment between stanzas 2 and 5(no punctuation) when the tiger is set free, the proses of liberation, it was unnoticed , it happened quickly, like how u read it, since u have no punctuation
  • Mimetic to the tiger strips (the lines length create this, as well as it happens between the stripes and the bars, they reflect each other until they become one
  • Uneven numbers (19) so the one in the middle is the path leading to liberation, it marks a now and then
7. Justify the following statement:
The main theme in "Tiger in the Menagerie" is the delusions of mankind as to our true naure.

  • What is our nature?

  • What does the tiger represent?
